We are a retired couple now in our early 80s, who have been collecting antiques, folk art, ethnographic and devotional objects, etc.
for over 60 years.
But now our situation has changed.
We recently sold our large retirement home and have moved into much smaller accommodations.
We find ourselves with a need to do some serious downsizing.

This listing is for an unusual and rare Victorian Ladies Folding Table.
This table gets its name from a complicated and heavy cast iron mechanism that allows the table to be tilted at an angle to facilitate letter writing, or sketching.
The mechanism was invented and patented (1877) by George W.
Gates of Worcester, Massachusetts.
There are two small drawers with wooden knob pulls.
, one of which has the original label identifying the the table.
This table was made circa 1880 at the original manufacturing facility in Worcester.
Similar, but later tables were made in Philadelphia after Gates moved there following a series of personal tragedies.
The folding mechanism is designed to be decorative as well as functional, terminating in an eye-catching pendant finial.
The iron tilting mechanism is fitted to an elaborately shaped four leg base.
The rosette decorated splayed legs can be folded together.
With the top fully tilted and the legs folded the table can be stored flat reducing space requirements.

Gates, (born July 1838, died January 1917), the inventor and manufacture of this table led an interesting life.
