General Description:
The ER Tech III is a licensed EMT-Intermediate caregiver, responsible for performing continued assessment planning, evaluation and delivery of patient care, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
S/he provides safe, prudent, economical patient care according to his/her knowledge and skills as an EMT-I, and in compliance with GRMC standards of nursing care, the New Mexico Board of Nurse Practice Act, and the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (TJC).
The ER tech III has adaptability to work in an environment for which the required workload may be fast-paced and stressful.
Essential Functions:
Trained in EKG rhythm recognition for the monitoring of patients
Obtains and charts patient vital signs
Performs and documents glucose accuchecks, and other tests and procedures
Performs quality control test on glucose monitor daily.
Performs phlebotomy as needed after completion of training and required return demonstrations per policy
Collects specimens for lab assessment including urine, blood, and stool.
Handles laboratory specimens such as blood, urine and other bodily fluids
Places ID and allergy bands, using double identifiers for patient safety
Assists in the application and removal of patient restraints, and provides documentation according to policy and procedure
Assists with patient ambulation and transfer
Completes all patient care documentation in a timely manner
Assists patients with daily routines, such as dressing and toileting
Splints extremities, applies ace wraps, immobilizers and measures for crutches
Provides wound care and dressing changes
IV insertion after completion of training and required return demonstrations per policy
Removal of IV after completion of training and required return demonstrations per policy
Uses adjunctive airway equipment oral and nasal airway insertion and management, AMBU bag to assist in breathing or oxygen administration per orders
Escorts patients and visitors in and out of the hospital
Assists nurses and providers with procedures
Provides information and emotional support to patients and family
Communicates information to RNs and other ER team members as necessary
Prepares patient care areas; cleans and stocks patient rooms
Assists to maintain clean and quiet environment for patients and fellow colleagues.
Performs Basic Emergency Medical Care or first aid per scope of practice as part of his/her job.
Administers medications per scope of practice with provider orders.

Education and Training Requirements:
High school diploma or GED
Active New Mexico EMT-Intermediate certification
Current BLS (AHA) certification
PEARS (Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition & Stabilization) within 3 months of hire
EKG rhythm recognition course within 3 months of hire
1 year experience in an acute setting, or active field experience, preferred
