Job Description and Duties Under the general direction of the Caltrans Maintenance Area Superintendent, the Stationary Engineer is responsible for a variety of skilled work in the operation, maintenance, servicing and repair including but not limited to HVAC systems including ventilation of office and maintenance buildings, garage doors, boiler systems, fuel systems, electrical components, maintenance and operation of Safety Roadside Rest Areas, interior and exterior lighting, sewage lift station pumps, boilers, storm water pumps and controllers, transformers, back flow testing, fire pumps, power, water, air compressors, all types of motors, single and multiphase electrical circuits up to 480 volts, and other mechanical systems for buildings.
The Stationary Engineer may be required to work alternate shifts such as but not limited to 5/8, 9/80, 4/10, nights and/or weekends.
Will be required to work overtime and must be able to respond after hours to emergency calls, storms, or special projects.
Must be able to climb and work from scaffolding and ladders, personnel hoists and lifts.
This position must travel throughout the District 3 Sutter/Sierra Region and occasionally statewide.
Incumbent must possess a valid Class C Driver’s License.
As the operator on file for various water disinfecting stations throughout the Region, it will be desirable for the stationary engineer to maintain a minimum of a T1 or D1 license in order to be in compliance with the State Water Board.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Stationary Engineer Exam.

Working Conditions Position is located in Downieville, Sierra County.
Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.
While at their base of operation, employee may be required to sit for long periods using a keyboard and video display terminal.
Other physical activities will include standing, walking, bending at the neck and waist, stooping, squatting climbing, kneeling, twisting at the neck and waist, traversing steep slopes, and pruning or cutting vegetation to gain access.
Operating a motor vehicle for long periods is also part of this function.
The ability to lift 80 pounds or move large or cumbersome equipment from one location to another will be necessary.
Other activities may be reaching above or at the shoulder, pushing or pulling, simple grasping or fine manipulation.
Some of this position is labor intensive.
Incumbent must have physical ability to react quickly to errant motorist and do strenuous manual labor.
While at their base operation, employee will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting and be required to sit or stand for prolonged periods.
Frequent travel throughout the District and fieldwork is required.
Incumbent must follow all policies, procedures and safe working practices.
Employee will also be required to travel and work outdoors and may be exposed to dirt, noise, uneven surfaces and/or extreme heat and cold.
The incumbent must be able to respond to reported system failures that may occur on short notice.
These incidents may occur anytime, during the day or night and on weekends or holidays and in any type of weather.
The incumbent will be expected to be available for extended periods out of town on a per diem basis.
New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
